Overview

A deep-blue metamorphic rock used as a semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. Lapis is the Latin word for “stone”, with its most important mineral component of lazurite. It usually occurs in crystalline marble as a result of contact metamorphism. It gets its intense blue color due to the presence of the trisulfur radical anion in the crystal.
